Young man critically injured after slipping into snake pit while harvesting bitter gourds in central India
In a tragic incident in central India’s Madhya Pradesh, a young man slipped and fell into a snake pit while harvesting bitter gourds in a field. The snake in the pit bit the man’s hand, causing serious injuries.
The incident took place at Paharpur village of Ghoradongri district on May 8.
Visuals showed the man who was bitten by the snake was admitted to the hospital, his hand was swollen and blood was oozing from the wound. Additionally, the broken fang of the snake was also present at the hospital.
The victim, identified as Vijay Bairagi, encountered the mishap while engaged in agricultural activities on Wednesday. As he was harvesting bitter gourds, he lost his footing and tumbled into a nearby snake pit. Subsequently, a snake lurking in the pit struck his hand, inflicting severe wounds. Moreover, one of the snake’s fangs broke off and remained lodged in Bairagi’s hand.
Prompt action by his family members led to his swift transportation to Ghoradongri Hospital, where doctors stabilized his condition. However, due to the severity of his injuries and the embedded fang, he was later transferred to the district hospital for further specialized treatment.
Concerned about potential complications from the snake’s bite, relatives also brought the broken fang to the hospital authorities, emphasizing the need for thorough medical attention. The incident has sparked concerns among villagers about safety measures during agricultural work, especially in areas prone to snake habitats. Authorities have urged caution and advised farmers to remain vigilant while working in fields, particularly during the harvesting season.
