In a recent incident in central India’s Madhya Pradesh a Russell Viper, has given birth to more than 35 babies.

The incident took place in Sagar district on July 17.

Visuals showed a box filled with a dozen baby snakes, with the snake catcher using a stick to carefully handle one of them. He was seen diligently caring for the baby snakes, ensuring they were safely placed into the box.

According to reports, upon opening the box, the startling discovery was made. Snake catchers were astonished to find over 35 baby Russell’s vipers inside. The female snake was promptly separated, and the babies were placed in a separate box.

Akil Baba, a seasoned snake catcher in Sagar with 40 years of experience, had captured a Russell’s viper from Mahakaleshwar Colony, Lodhipura, just two days ago. This species ranks as the sixth most venomous snake globally. Suspecting the snake might be pregnant or have ingested something, Akil Baba had housed it in a box at his shop.

When he revisited on Wednesday evening, and opened the box, he was shocked to see the baby snakes. There were around three dozen baby snakes in the box.

He emphasized the species’ extreme toxicity, highlighting the fortunate timing of the capture. Had these numerous baby Russell’s vipers been born in a residential area, it could have led to a disaster. Notably, Russell’s vipers do not lay eggs.
