Woman brutally beaten by in-laws over dowry in northern India; police file case
A newly-married woman in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh faced severe brutality at the hands of her in-laws after their dowry demands were not met.
The incident took place in Atrauli village of Aligarh district on June 4.
Visuals showed in a village, a woman was tied to a tree, crying profusely as she recounted the names of those who had beaten her. Surrounding her were her in-laws, seated nearby, along with other villagers who were also present, watching the scene unfold.
In a shocking incident from Aligarh, a woman from a village under the Kuwarsi police station was tied to a tree and brutally beaten by her in-laws over unmet dowry demands. The woman had been married to a man from village Soorat Garh under Atrauli police station. The assault occurred on Tuesday and came to light after a video began circulating on social media on Thursday.
The woman’s parents lodged a complaint with the police, detailing the relentless torture their daughter had endured since her marriage last year. They reported that shortly after the wedding, the groom’s family began demanding a motorcycle as dowry and subjected the woman to severe harassment when their demands were not fulfilled.
The situation escalated on Tuesday when the in-laws tied her to a tree and beat her. She was only released after some locals intervened. According to the woman’s family, the in-laws had been emboldened by their previous acts of harassment, which eventually led to this public and brutal assault.
Circle Officer (CO) Amrit Jain confirmed on Friday that a case has been registered against the husband and his family members. The police are making efforts to apprehend the accused. The incident has stirred significant public outrage, highlighting the persistent issue of dowry-related violence in the region.
