Wolf No. 5 roams the fields in search of prey in northern India
In a startling development from northern India’s Uttar Pradesh, a wild wolf has been spotted prowling the fields, raising concerns among local farmers.
The incident took place at Bahraich and the video went viral on September 5.
Visuals showed in a field, a lone wolf was seen running frantically from one end to the other. As the wolf darted across the open space, it was clearly agitated and on high alert. Nearby, individuals recording the scene from their bikes caught the wolf’s erratic movements on video. Alarmed by their presence, the wolf swiftly fled from the open field and sought refuge by hiding in the nearby bushes, disappearing from sight.
In Uttar Pradesh, endangered wolves have become a threat to human lives. Since March 2024, nine children and one woman have died in wolf attacks in Bahraich. Additionally, wolves have been causing terror in Sitapur, Pilibhit, and Hastinapur. After significant effort, four wolves have been captured in Bahraich.
Despite this, it is not difficult to infer that the real culprits are still at large, given the ongoing conflict between humans and wolves. Experts also believe that the wolves responsible for preying on humans have not yet been captured. Therefore, it is crucial for the local administration and forest department to intensify their efforts with greater seriousness.
The recurring question is why wolves are becoming man-eaters. Is their population increasing? According to Sanjay Pathak, Field Director and wildlife expert at Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, wolves are extremely shy animals. They flee so quickly upon seeing humans that photographing them is not easy. Wolves live in packs similar to humans. If a member of the pack goes missing after a hunt, the remaining members do not touch the prey until they find the missing member.
