Violent protest erupts as crowds smash car with batons and rods

The group of protesters including a woman vandalized a parked car with a baton and rod. The protest erupted in the city after a replica of the Indian Constitution was vandalized.

The incident took place at Parbhani railway station in Parbhani district on December 11.

A video shows a man striking a car, and moments later, a group of protesters, including women, starts hitting the vehicle with batons and rods. A large crowd is attacking the car.

According to reports, Parbhani police have detained 50 individuals in connection with violent protests. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the unrest, stating that while the man responsible for damaging the replica was promptly arrested, the subsequent violence was “unacceptable.”

The incident unfolded after the glass-enclosed replica, located near the statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar at the railway station, was found damaged. Authorities arrested the suspect, identified as Pawar, who reportedly suffers from mental health issues. “We have medical documentation confirming his condition,” said Parbhani Collector Raghunath Gawade, assuring that the situation was under control.

Despite the arrest, tensions escalated on Wednesday during a bandh called to protest the incident. Demonstrators vandalized shops, vehicles, and even the district collector’s office. Police reported that around 20 vehicles were damaged in the clashes.

Shahji Umap, Inspector General of Police said, “We are reviewing CCTV footage and will take strict action against those involved. Additionally, we are investigating the motivations behind the protests.” Prohibitory orders banning gatherings of more than five people remain in effect across Parbhani to maintain law and order. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate as investigations continue.
