Vet saves leopard’s life in daring rescue operation in southern India

by Surya PrakashA veterinarian was involved in a daring rescue operation to save a leopard’s life after it had fallen into a well in southern India’s Karnataka.
This incident happened in Belvai, Mangalore on April 20.
Visuals showed the leopard on one side of the well. The veterinarian, named Dr Yashaswi Narawi consented to be put into a cage which would be lowered into the well for the leopard to be captured. The doctor, who works at the Chitte Pili Rescue Centre and also is a consultant veterinarian for the forest department, was seen entering into the cage which was then lowered into the well.
Dr Narawi, while speaking to Newslions said that he subsequently darted at the leopard from close range and was seen putting it into the cage. He then climbed up the well with the help of a ladder while the leopard was brought up in the cage.
Dr Narawi was set to call it a day after having had a lot of work which involved a surgery on a python and treatment of an Olive Ridley turtle. However, he didn’t refuse to go when informed by the forest department about this leopard, trapped in the well which was 25 feet deep. Locals shared that the leopard had fallen into a well as it tried to escape after grabbing hold of a chicken from a house in the area and the forest department, despite all their efforts, weren’t able to take it out. Tranquilising the leopard from above the well was a tough task and hence, Dr Narawi agreed to be put inside the cage which would be lowered into the well.
With the help of a blowpipe, he was able to sedate the leopard from close range and put it into the cage. The leopard was subsequently released on April 21 after being kept on observation
