Vehicles submerged in flood as torrential rain batters western India

In a severe flooding incident in western India’s Maharashtra, vehicles were submerged due to torrential rainfall.

The incident took place at Sheetal Signal on LBS Road in Kurla, Mumbai, on September 25.

Visuals showed vehicles submerged in floodwaters as roads turned into streams from the relentless downpour. Passengers were seen escaping through their car windows, while others sat on their roofs, trying to avoid the rising water that flooded the interiors of their vehicles.

According to reports, heavy downpours severely affected the eastern suburb of Mumbai. After a significant break, heavy rains hit Mumbai on Wednesday (September 25, 2024), flooding low-lying areas, halting local train services, and diverting at least 14 inbound flights.

Some roads virtually transformed into fast-moving rivers as several parts of the city recorded over 100 mm of rain within five hours. The India Meteorological Department raised its orange alert for Mumbai and nearby districts to a red alert, which will remain effective until 8:30 am on Thursday.
