Unexpected incident in northern India: sewer chamber fluctuations baffle residents

In a bizarre occurrence amidst heavy rains, residents and commuters in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh, were left bewildered as a sewer chamber repeatedly rose and fell, halting traffic and drawing stunned onlookers.

The incident took place in Kachhari Road, Civil Lines, Kanpur city on June 26.

Visuals showed the lid of a deep sewer chamber suddenly lifted and descended multiple times over a span of about 10 seconds, creating a surreal scene on the rain-soaked street.

According to reports, the unusual event unfolded near the Police Commissioner’s Office, disrupting the flow of vehicles moving slowly due to inclement weather.

Authorities from the Jal Nigam, responsible for water supply and sewage management, attributed the phenomenon to pressure from gas trapped within the sewer lines, exacerbated by the heavy downpour. Despite efforts to normalise the situation, pedestrians and motorists remained cautious, avoiding the area fearing further disruptions.
