Tragic! Under-construction bridge collapses for third time in northern India
In a shocking incident in northern India’s Bihar, a portion of the under-construction bridge connecting Bhagalpur and Khagaria collapsed in the early morning.
The incident took place at the Sultanganj Aguwani Ganga bridge in Bhagalpur district on August 17.
Visuals showed the pillar of the bridge and a significant portion of it partially broken and submerged in the fast-flowing Ganges river.
According to reports, the incident occurred due to the rising water level of the Ganges. The structure built for the segment of the slab between pillar numbers 9 and 10 was submerged in the river. This marks the third time the superstructure of this bridge has collapsed. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.
Reportedly, last year on June 4, 2023, the superstructure of pillar numbers 9, 10, 11, and 12 fell from the Agwani side into the Ganges. Earlier, on the night of April 30, 2022, pillar number five collapsed due to a gust of wind. The construction of this bridge was initially scheduled for completion on July 4, 2024, but the deadline has now been extended to 2026.
