A tragic incident took place in northern India’s Orissa where a stampede-like situation hindered the procession carried by the pilgrims.
The incident took place at Bara Danda, the grand road of Puri district on July 7.
Visuals showed a heart-rending scene of a stampede, with panicked crowds running in chaotic directions, trampling over others. Amidst the chaos, some individuals were observed bravely attempting to rescue and protect their loved ones from the stampede.
According to officials, one person died of suffocation during the mishap, and several others were injured during the chariot pulling. The district administration swiftly mobilized emergency services, transporting the injured to nearby hospitals. Two police personnel were also injured, with one reported to have a broken leg. Pilgrims with minor injuries have been discharged, while others remain under medical care.
Reportedly, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has expressed grief over the death of a devotee during the procession. Along with this, he has also announced a compensation of USD 4800 to the family of the deceased.
 
According to reports, thousands of people pulled the nearly 45-feet tall wooden chariot of Lord Balabhadra, followed by the chariots of Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath. It was estimated that one million devotees converged on the town for this significant event.
