Torrential rains in northern India cause flooding, chaos in temple

Relentless torrential rains have wreaked havoc in northern India’s Uttarakhand, particularly in the Doon Valley, Mussoorie, and Bandal Valley regions, causing widespread flooding and severe disruption.

The incident took place in Tapkeshwar temple of Dehradun district on August 22.

Visuals showed the rapid flowing floodwaters all brown in colour shattering everything that comes in its way.

According to reports, for the past three nights, the area has been hit by heavy downpours, with a particularly intense six-hour rainfall in the evening turning the situation critical.

The Bindal River overflowed, flooding several homes in the surrounding colony, while the Clementtown lake also burst its banks, trapping a mother and son in their home. They were rescued by police with the help of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Air Force security personnel.

Floodwaters also surged into homes in several other colonies, including Gurudwara Colony, Mandir Colony, and Saraswati Vihar, causing significant damage. Major roads throughout the city, such as those near Ghantaghar, Tehsil Chowk, and the Rispana River bridge, were submerged, creating dangerous conditions for drivers.

The Meteorological Center has issued warnings of more heavy rain, including a yellow alert for Dehradun, Chamoli, Nainital, and Pithoragarh districts, and an orange alert for Bageshwar district, where very heavy rain is expected. The famous Tapkeshwar temple in Dehradun has also been affected, with floodwaters entering the premises.

Authorities are urging residents to stay alert as further rounds of heavy rain are anticipated, potentially worsening the situation.
