Torrential rains flood underpass, paralyze traffic in southern India

In a severe weather event in southern India’s Karnataka, torrential rains flooded an underpass, bringing traffic to a standstill.

The incident took place in the Panathur area of Bengaluru city on August 29.

Visuals showed the underpass as one of the most severely impacted areas, where vehicles and pedestrians were seen navigating through water levels ranging from 1 to 1.5 feet, struggling to make their way through the flooded stretch.

According to reports from the India Meteorological Department’s Meteorological Centre in Bengaluru, the city received 26.8 mm of rain on Thursday, while the HAL observatory recorded 35.6 mm of rain as of 8:30 pm. The heavy rains and subsequent waterlogging caused widespread disruption, leaving commuters and residents facing severe delays and challenges.

The heavy downpour severely impacted the Outer Ring Road in the east, leading to significant congestion at several points from Silk Board Junction to Karthik Nagar, including Marathahalli Junction, the service road, Kariyamana Agrahara, Kasturi Nagar, Veerannapalya, Salem Bridge, and the Lowry underpass.
