Update: Torchlight tribute procession in India turns tragic injuring multiple participants
by ShravyaA fiery mishap unfolded in central India’s Madhya Pradesh during a torchlight procession commemorating the martyrs of the 26/11 terrorist attacks.
The incident took place in Khandwa district on November 28.
Visuals showed participants in the procession advancing with torchlights during the evening, their flames illuminating the path ahead. However, chaos erupted moments later when a sudden spill of torch oil ignited a massive fire, quickly engulfing the area in flames. The blaze spread rapidly, sparking panic among the crowd, with many desperately fleeing, leading to a stampede-like scenario. Later, police official addressed the media, providing details and narrating the sequence of events surrounding the incident.
According to reports, over 30 people suffered burn injuries and were rushed to the Khandwa District Hospital for immediate medical attention. The local Superintendent of Police visited the injured to oversee relief efforts.
The procession, which began around 11 PM and was to conclude at Ghantaghar Chowk within 30 minutes, took a tragic turn when torches, made with flammable materials like camphor powder and wood shavings, toppled over, spilling oil and igniting the devastating fire. While over 1,000 torches were part of the event, only around 200 were lit at the time. Eyewitnesses claimed over 50 individuals were affected, although official records confirmed injuries to 30 participants.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are focusing on providing comprehensive medical care to those injured.
