In a significant operation at an airport in northern India’s Delhi, customs officials detained three passengers for attempting to smuggle approximately 1.025 kg of gold valued at an undisclosed amount.
The incident took place at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi district on October 26.
Visuals showed the men opening the sleeves of their wrists and unfolding their sleeves a little, revealing the silver-coated bracelets. They were asked to remove them one by one. The moment they unfolded their sleeves, the silver bracelets were discovered on their hands, which they had hidden under the sleeves of their shirts.
According to reports, customs officers conducted an x-ray of the passengers’ baggage, where nothing suspicious was initially detected. However, a strong beep was heard from all three passengers during the walkthrough metal detector (DFMD), leading to further investigation. The officials discovered three silver-coated gold strips molded in the shape of kadas, concealed under the sleeves of the passengers.
The operation unfolded based on intelligence received prior to the arrival of the flight. The customs department is currently conducting further investigations under the Customs Act, 1962, highlighting their ongoing efforts to combat gold smuggling at the airport.
