Thick foam layer on Yamuna river as pollution levels spike in northern India
October 26, 2024
A toxic layer of foam floating on the Yamuna River at northern India’s Delhi highlights worsening pollution levels. The sight has intensified political clashes, with BJP leaders blaming the AAP government for alleged inaction in cleaning up the river.
The incident took place at the Kalindi Kunj area of Delhi on October 26.
Visuals showed a thick layer of toxic white foam covered the Yamuna River, stretching across the water like a vast, white sheet. The foam spread extensively over the river, obscuring the water beneath and creating an almost surreal scene, where it appeared as though a blanket of snow lay atop the river’s surface. This layer of foam extended far along the river, visibly polluting the natural flow and giving an unsettling contrast against the surroundings.
According to reports, an NGO responsible for regular cleaning of the Yamuna banks expressed concerns, noting that the foam poses risks to both skin and eyes. The NGO’s leader said, “The river’s toxic foam makes our work difficult, and the harmful effects extend to anyone exposed to the water.” The main culprit for this pollution is believed to be untreated sewage water flowing into the river, leading to the formation of the hazardous foam.
The situation has sparked a heated exchange between political parties. BJP leaders, frequently visiting the Kalindi Kunj area, have used the incident to criticize Delhi’s AAP government, holding it responsible for the increasing pollution levels. On Thursday, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva made headlines by taking a dip in the Yamuna River to draw attention to the issue. Hours later, he reportedly fell ill and was taken to a hospital, where doctors advised him to rest.
Sachdeva called the move a protest against the AAP government’s alleged “failure and corruption” in tackling Yamuna pollution and promised that, if elected in February 2025, the BJP would establish a dedicated Yamuna Cleanliness Authority. BJP leaders also symbolically set up a stage with two VIP chairs for AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi as part of their protest.
