Tense standoff in eastern India as protesters clash with police
In a heated confrontation in eastern India’s West Bengal, protesters clashed with police during a march demanding justice for a rape and murder case.
The incident took place in the Santragachi area of Kolkata city on August 27.
Visuals showed the demonstrators, many students and ordinary citizens, carrying the national tricolour and chanting slogans. The situation escalated as protesters attempted to breach barricades, leading to police using water cannons, lathi charges, and tear gas to control the crowd.
According to reports, the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ protest march, organized in response to the alleged assault at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, quickly turned chaotic. Participants broke through police barricades and threw stones at officers. The march began at College Square and was headed towards the state secretariat, Nabanna.
