Stampede unfolds at railway station in western India amid festival travel surge

In a tense scene in western India’s Maharashtra, a stampede broke out as passengers crowded the platform, leading to multiple injuries.

The incident took place at Bandra Terminus in Mumbai city on October 27.

Visuals showed the chaotic scene at the boarding area of the train, where a massive rush enveloped the platform. Passengers were seen struggling to board while carrying their luggage, creating a frantic atmosphere filled with pushing and pulling. The platform’s chaos was evident as individuals attempted to board a heavily crowded train. Despite the crash, some passengers tried to board the moving train, resulting in many falling and lying injured on the platform. Railway and police personnel were seen carrying the injured through the turmoil, highlighting the mess created by the stampede.

According to reports, at least 10 people sustained injuries, with two in critical condition. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and local passengers promptly rushed the injured to Bhabha Hospital. The stampede happened during a rush of travelers heading home for Diwali and Chhath festivals, with unreserved passengers scrambling to board the arriving 22921 Bandra-Gorakhpur Antyodaya Express, which reached platform number 1 around 2:45 a.m. and was set to depart at 5:10 a.m. The scramble to secure seats on the unreserved train, heightened by the festive season, led to the unfortunate incident.
