New Delhi, INDIA – A smuggling attempt was successfully thwarted at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) on January 6, when customs officials intercepted a male passenger carrying 379 grams of 24-carat gold concealed within ladies’ dresses. The gold, valued at approximately ₹29 lakhs (about USD 33,851.67), was discovered during routine checks at the Green Channel exit.

The passenger, an Indian national traveling from Jeddah on flight SV-756, was flagged for further inspection after customs officers detected suspicious images during an X-ray scan of his baggage. Utilizing spot profiling techniques, officials decided to conduct a meticulous manual examination of the passenger’s belongings.

During the inspection, customs officers discovered 201 silver-coated rings that were cleverly disguised as metal buttons sewn into the garments. Upon further analysis, these rings were confirmed to be made of 24-carat gold. The seized gold has been confiscated, and authorities have initiated further investigations into the smuggling attempt.

Officials at IGI Airport have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing vigilance and combating illegal activities in a bid to maintain airport security and prevent smuggling operations.
