Smuggling plot foiled! Passengers conceal gold paste in briefs, customs uncover glittering haul
In a remarkable interception at the airport, customs officials apprehended a passenger attempting to smuggle gold disguised as a chemical paste.
The incident took place at Indira Gandhi International Airport at New Delhi district, Delhi, northern India on December 9.
Visuals show the passenger unzipping his trousers and removing concealed pouches wrapped in adhesive tape, from which gold was extracted. The two pouches were later seen placed on a weighing machine.
According to reports, the individual, a 39-year-old from Rajasthan, was traveling from Dubai to Delhi aboard flight 6E 1464 on 8 December. The incident occurred at Indira Gandhi International Airport in northern India, where customs officers conducted a detailed baggage and personal search. Officials discovered two uneven rectangular pouches concealed within the passenger’s underwear. These pouches, wrapped with silver adhesive tape, contained gold in paste form, weighing 2723 grams, including packaging material.
The passenger admitted to smuggling the gold in chemical paste form from Dubai. Further analysis revealed 2491 grams of 24-carat gold extracted from the paste, valued at approximately USD 2,18,000 (₹1.81 crores). The gold was seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act 1962, and the individual was arrested under Section 104. Investigations are ongoing to uncover more details about the smuggling network.
