Severe flooding strikes as cyclone Fengal triggers intense rainfall before landfall

The incident took place in Chennai in southern India on November 30.

According to the reports, Cyclone Fengal is forecasted to make landfall on the Tamil Nadu coast this evening, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue a red alert for several regions in the southern states due to the expected heavy rainfall.

Heavy rainfall results in significant waterlogging at 134 locations throughout the city. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has mobilized 1,686 motor pumps to remove stagnant water from the affected areas. The GCC has deployed 137 high-capacity pumps, each with a horsepower of 100, along with 484 tractor-mounted pumps for rapid water removal. Teams are working diligently to ensure that flooded areas are cleared as quickly as possible.

In response to the crisis, the GCC has established 329 relief centers throughout the city, offering vital services such as food, water, and shelter to residents impacted by the flooding. To ensure swift assistance, a robust team of 22,000 personnel and 18,500 volunteers is on standby for emergency rescue and relief operations.
