Serious patient, attendants trapped in hospital lift due to management lapses in central India

The incident took place at Nandkumar Singh Chouhan Medical College Hospital, located in Khargone district on September 12.
Visuals showed in the hospital’s lift, a group consisting of hospital staff, a seriously injured man, and his companions found themselves trapped. Amid the chaos, they desperately attempted to call for help, but their calls went unanswered. The injured man, who was lying on a stretcher, appeared unconscious and in a critical condition. The scene was marked by anxiety and urgency as those trapped tried to resolve the dire situation.
Late Wednesday night, a serious patient was being transported in a lift at Nandkumar Singh Chauhan Medical College Hospital when the lift became stuck between floors. The trapped group included the patient, their attendant, and six hospital staff members. Despite repeated calls to the lift supervisor, the phone went unanswered. In response, the patient’s relatives recorded a video of the situation and shared it on social media, drawing attention to the crisis.
According to hospital management, the lift failure was due to a technical fault. Dr. Ranjit Badole from the hospital stated that the issue was resolved after contacting the substation in charge. He also mentioned that an investigation into the incident would be conducted, and any negligence identified would lead to appropriate actions against the responsible personnel.
This incident underscores ongoing issues with the hospital’s lift system, as one lift is already out of service, and the remaining lift frequently malfunctions under increased load. The lapse in emergency response and maintenance raises concerns about patient safety and hospital management practices.
