SDRF teams ensure safe passage for pilgrims on treacherous journey in northern India

The incident took place near the Atalakoti Glacier, Chamoli district on June 11.
Visuals showed how the officials helped everyone be it an adult, old person or children alike and held hands while making them cross the glacier safely.
Recently, two female assistant professors, Divya and Tanya, shared their experience of falling behind their group and sustaining minor injuries during their pilgrimage to Shri Hemkund Sahib. They praised the efforts of SDRF personnel, particularly Inspector Deepak Samant and Paramedics Kamal Singh, who ensured their safe passage through the glacier and provided essential medical assistance.Expressing gratitude for the assistance provided, their testimony underscores the invaluable role played by SDRF in safeguarding pilgrims on this challenging pilgrimage route.
Nestled near the Atalakoti Glacier, this section of the pilgrimage route spans approximately 150 to 200 meters in width, presenting a daunting obstacle for pilgrims. Heavy snowfall and the presence of glaciers further compound the difficulties, requiring pilgrims to navigate through treacherous conditions.
To aid pilgrims in this arduous journey, teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have played a pivotal role. With two dedicated teams stationed strategically—one at the Gangharia Base Camp and the other at Shri Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara—the SDRF ensures the safe passage of pilgrims across the glacier.
Accompanying each pilgrim through their safety cordon, SDRF personnel ensure no untoward incidents occur. Since May 24th, these teams have successfully facilitated the passage of approximately 55,333 pilgrims across the glacier, ensuring the success of their pilgrimage. Additionally, over 500 pilgrims have received primary medical assistance from SDRF personnel during this time.
The challenges of crossing the glacier are exacerbated after snowfall, underscoring the vital role played by SDRF in ensuring a smooth journey for pilgrims. Ms. Ridhim Agarwal, Deputy Inspector General of Police, SDRF, commended the exemplary work of SDRF personnel along the Char Dham pilgrimage route, highlighting the installation of signboards in areas prone to landslides and avalanches, ensuring the safety and awareness of pilgrims.
Mr. Manikant Mishra, Subedar, SDRF, emphasized the significance of the Atalakoti Glacier journey on the route to Shri Hemkund Sahib. He reiterated the commitment of SDRF teams to ensuring the safety of pilgrims and continuously striving to secure their journey.
