Road collapses in northern India, injures local councilor and six others during leakage repair
A newly constructed RCC road in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh, collapsed by 25 feet while workers were fixing a water leakage issue, resulting in injuries to a local councilor and six others.
The incident took place at Vinod Vihar Colony, Ward 34, Saharanpur district on August 4.
Visuals showed in Vinod Vihar Colony a road suddenly collapsed, causing chaos as several people fell into the crater. The scene was frantic with local residents rushing to help the injured, pulling them out of the rubble. The area was crowded with onlookers, and emergency services scrambled to manage the situation and provide aid.
In a troubling incident in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, a road built just a year ago suddenly caved in by 25 feet while repair work was underway to fix a persistent water leakage. The collapse occurred in Vinod Vihar Colony, Ward 34, where the road had also been fitted with a water line and deep sewer line.
Local councilor Sudhir Panwar, who had previously lodged several complaints with the municipal corporation about the leaking water line, was among those injured when the road gave way. Along with Panwar, six others, including nearby women and workers, sustained injuries. The incident prompted immediate action from the authorities as local residents staged protests against the municipal corporation and elected officials.
The Mayor, Dr. Ajay Kumar Singh, arrived at the scene with municipal officials and ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. He assured that appropriate measures would be taken based on the findings of the inquiry. Meanwhile, Member of Parliament Imran Masood criticized the execution of smart city projects, emphasizing the need for stringent action against negligence.
City Magistrate Gajendra Kumar also assessed the situation, ensuring that all necessary steps were being taken to address the issue. The injured were initially taken to the district hospital, with three later transferred to Medigram Hospital for further treatment.
Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Chauhan confirmed that the collapse was due to water damage and pledged a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause and hold responsible parties accountable.
