Residential area ravaged by sudden landslide amid cyclone

A residential area in the region was struck by a landslide and flooding triggered by heavy rains from Cyclone Fengal, causing significant distress among residents.

The incident took place in Tiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu, in southern India on December 1.

Visuals show the once-quiet residential area nestled on the lower slopes, now overwhelmed by torrents of muddy water cascading down with force. The relentless rain, triggered by Cyclone Fengal, caused a devastating landslide, leaving residents peering out of their homes in shock and distress.

According to reports, the landslide occurred on Sunday at 4:30 pm on the lower slopes of the famed Annamalaiyar Hill, following heavy rainfall brought by Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall near Chennai on Saturday afternoon. A second landslide struck Tiruvannamalai, a Tamil Nadu temple town, on Monday, a day after the first incident resulted in a boulder crashing onto a residential building, tragically killing a family of seven.

A senior official from the Weather Department mentioned that the extremely heavy rainfall across parts of Tamil Nadu was due to the remnants of the cyclone, now lingering as a strong low-pressure system over the northern part of the state.
