Rape victim climbs on water tanker in northern India, pleads for justice
In a recent incident in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh, an 18-year-old rape victim climbed onto a water tanker at the divisional commissioner’s office to demand justice.
The incident took place in Gonda district on July 9.
Visuals showed the victim hanging onto the railing of the water tanker, visibly distressed by her situation in broad daylight.
According to officials, Additional Superintendent of Police (East) Manoj Kumar Rawat stated that in December 2023, the mother of the victim, who was a minor at the time of the alleged incident, complained.
Rawat disclosed that the complaint alleged that her three brothers — Umesh (24), Durgesh (22), and Kundan (18) — forcibly took her on a motorcycle at gunpoint and raped her. The victim reportedly claimed that the police were shielding the brothers. Allegedly, the police failed to take action against her accused rapists and only filed a final report. Rawat mentioned that after approximately three hours of persuasion, the woman was convinced to come down, reassured that the case would be addressed appropriately.
ASP Rawat reported that following a court order, a case involving the alleged kidnapping and rape of a minor girl was registered against three brothers. Subsequently, after the complaint was not substantiated during the investigation, a final report was filed in the case.
