Quick-thinking ticket checker saves passenger from heart attack on moving train

A lifesaving act unfolded on a train in northern India’s Bihar when a ticket examiner (TTE) performed CPR on a 62-year-old passenger who showed signs of a heart attack while travelling in a general coach.

The incident took place in the general coach of the Amrapali Express, en route from Amritsar to Hajipur on November 22.

Visuals showed the TTE administering chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth breathing as the passenger, Umesh Das, lay on a lower berth, still conscious and responsive during the ordeal. Fellow travelers hailed the TTE as a hero for his swift action, which stabilized the elderly man’s condition before medical professionals could intervene.

Speaking to Newslions, Pramod Kumar, Sub-Inspector at the RPF Post in Chhapra Junction, stated that the passenger began experiencing severe discomfort mid-journey. Relatives and co-passengers promptly informed the TTE, who immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and contacted the nearest railway hospital for further assistance. Upon the train’s arrival at Chhapra Junction, the passenger was safely taken to a local hospital for specialized care.

The timely intervention not only prevented a potential tragedy but also underscored the critical importance of first aid knowledge among railway personnel. Umesh Das is currently stable and recovering well.
