Protests erupt after alleged assault of female student in Pakistan, over 150 college students arrested
After the alleged rape of a first year college student, students took to the streets to protest in Pakistan. So far, more than 150 students have been arrested for inciting violence during the demonstrations.
The incident took place in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore. The video went viral on October 17.
Visuals showed a large number of people protesting on the road. They were seen blocking the roads, breaking college properties, etc. In response to the alleged rape, several students assembled outside four campuses of the Punjab Group of Colleges in Lahore on Monday, October 14. They gathered in the area, setting fire to the parking lot and vandalizing property by smashing windows and breaking doors.
According to reports, over 150 students have been arrested by the Rawalpindi police in Pakistan for protesting against the alleged rape of a private college student. The police also deployed tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, as reported by Dawn newspaper.
Rawalpindi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Hafiz Kamran Asghar informed Dawn that the situation is now completely under control. He added that the police had no choice but to arrest anyone attempting to break the law while pretending to be a protestor.
