Protestors vandalize and topple former Bangladesh president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman statue

In a dramatic turn of events in Bangladesh, protestors have vandalized and pulled down a statue of former President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The incident took place in Dhaka on August 5.

Visuals captured the chaotic scene as jubilant crowds, waving flags, used ropes to topple the massive statue. The statue was brought down amid cheers and support from the protestors late into the evening. The crowd also vandalized the statue, further intensifying the scene.

Reports indicate that soldiers and police, backed by armored vehicles, had cordoned off routes to Prime Minister Hasina’s office with barbed wire. Despite these measures, large crowds overran the barriers and flooded the streets. Local media estimated the number of protestors to be around 400,000, though this figure remains unverified.
