Protest escalation: Resident doctors in southern India demand stipend revision

In a dramatic escalation in southern India’s Karnataka, 600 resident doctors staged a major protest demanding a revision of their stipend.

The incident took place at Kittur Chennamma Circle in Hubballi city on August 13.

Visuals captured the doctors blocking the landmark, passionately raising slogans, and holding placards in broad daylight. Dressed in their coats, they were visibly united in their call for justice.

According to reports, the protest was organized by the Karnataka Association of Resident Doctors (KARD), which represents resident doctors from all government medical colleges. The agitation was triggered by the longstanding issue of inadequate stipend revision for junior doctors.

The resident doctors allege that their stipend is 50% lower compared to their counterparts in other states, failing to cover living costs, academic expenses, and family needs amidst high inflation.
