Powerful 5.3-magnitude earthquake shakes southern India after two decades

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck in the early morning, sending tremors through the region for the first time in 20 years.

The incident occurred in Mulugu district of Telangana in southern India on December 4.

Visuals show a street visibly shaking as locals appeared unsettled, while commuters continued their journey with minimal distress. Other visuals reveal a ceiling fan gently swaying, highlighting the earthquake’s impact.

According to reports, no immediate casualties or significant damage. Tremors were felt in Hyderabad and parts of Andhra Pradesh, according to the National Center for Seismology. The earthquake struck at 7:27am, sparking panic among residents. Authorities are assessing the situation, and experts advise residents to stay alert and avoid crowded or unsafe structures during earthquakes.

Telangana is located in Seismic Zone II, the lowest intensity zone. India has four seismic zones, ranging from Zone II to Zone V, with Zone V being the most earthquake-prone due to the highest intensity of seismic activity.
