Poor drainage systems lead to severe waterlogging after heavy rain in southern India

Widespread waterlogging caused by inadequate drainage left roads submerged after continuous rain in southern India’s Karnataka. The water, which should have drained into nearby water bodies, remained stagnant, creating severe disruptions for commuters and raising concerns about the area’s infrastructure.

The incident took place at Horamavu Agara Lake located in Bangalore city and the video went viral on October 22.

Visuals showed after heavy and continuous rain, the road was heavily flooded, with water accumulating across the surface. Large pools of water had formed, leading to severe waterlogging. Vehicles passing through struggled to navigate, their tires submerged in water, splashing as they moved slowly. The scene was chaotic, with cars honking, drivers frustrated, and pedestrians trying to carefully step around the waterlogged areas. The cloudy sky and damp surroundings added to the gloom, as the rain showed no sign of stopping.

According to reports the Silicon Valley of India is facing persistent rainfall, which has caused massive waterlogging. Visuals of the concerning road conditions have taken over social media, triggering netizens to slam the IT hub’s infrastructure.

The Met Department predicted heavy rainfall will continue battering several parts of Karnataka on Wednesday, especially south interior and coastal Karnataka. Heavy downpours are also predicted in neighboring states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

“Moderate to heavy Rain/thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely to occur at isolated places over Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural districts,” the weather office said in a bulletin.
