Police seize $20,809 worth of illegal nylon manja during festive safety crackdown
The Police intensified their crackdown on the use of nylon manja, seizing and destroying banned threads valued at ₹18 lakh (USD 20,809.62) in a special operation.
The incident occurred at the Indora Ground in the Nagpur district, Maharashtra, on January 13.
The visual shows the authorities destroying the seized nylon manja using a road roller to ensure complete and effective disposal.
According to reports, Nagpur police arrested more than 50 individuals for possession of illegal material. The operation was launched in anticipation of Makar Sankranti, set to be celebrated on Tuesday, January 14. Raids were conducted across multiple shops in the city over the past few days, leading to the confiscation of large quantities of the hazardous thread. Known for its sharpness and durability, nylon manja poses significant risks to animals, birds, and humans, especially during kite-flying activities associated with the festival.
Police Commissioner Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal emphasized the commitment to ensuring public safety during the festive season. To bolster enforcement efforts, drones have been deployed to monitor kite-flying areas and track illegal sales. Police are patrolling busy localities and marketplaces, with some sellers reportedly operating from residential premises to evade detection.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid using nylon manja and instead opt for safer, eco-friendly alternatives.
