People wait in long queues as Delhi continues to grapple with water shortage
In a heartbreaking incident, People waiting in long queues to get water after shortage arises in northern India’s Delhi.
The incident took place near a water tanker to fill water in Chanakyapuri’s Vivekananda Camp on June 13.
Visuals showed residents in Chanakyapuri’s Vivekananda Camp chasing after a water tanker. Even before the vehicle came to a stop, several individuals were observed climbing the ladder attached to its back. Within moments, over 15 residents had climbed atop the tanker, while others on the ground assisted by passing hoses to them. A couple of policemen were also seen at the incident spot. People were seen filling their buckets, containers, and drums to cope with the acute water crisis.
According to water scarcity reports, Water Minister Atishi has written to Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, calling for an inquiry into senior officials at the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) over alleged ties with the “tanker mafia”. Atishi cites a decrease in water tanker deployment despite her directives as evidence. In response, the L-G’s office notes the DJB’s awareness of the water mafia but highlights the absence of formal complaints or requests for intervention.
