Overcrowded trains leave no room for standing during Chhath Puja rush in northern India

Amid the Chhath Puja celebrations, trains in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh were packed beyond capacity as thousands traveled home for the festival. With aisles overflowing and no standing space left, passengers endured severe overcrowding.

The incident took place at Charbagh station in Lucknow on November 4.

Visuals showed inside a Bihar-bound train packed with Chhath Puja travelers. Crowds filled every inch of space. Amid the intense crowd, one man was seen resting in a unique way—he had tied a bedsheet to the train’s ceiling, creating a makeshift hammock where he lay, trying to escape the rush below.

Ahead of the Chhath Puja, Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar on Sunday inspected facilities and said Railways are operating 195 special trains in 13 days from the Delhi area this year to facilitate the passengers.
