Over 150 cobras rescued from village house in 12-hour operation in northern India

In a dramatic 12-hour operation in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh over 150 cobras, including a 6-foot male and several 1.5-foot-long juveniles, were rescued from a house

The incident took place in Gangarani Village, Kubernath area in Khushinagar district on July 10.

Visuals showed several snakes were discovered and placed in a bucket by the snake expert. The snakes were of medium size and were writhing, desperately trying to escape the confines of the bucket. Their constant movement created a chaotic scene as they slithered over each other, seeking a way out.

The rescue operation began around 10 PM on Wednesday when Phulbadan Nishad spotted a large snake near his bed. Fearing for his life, Nishad fled the house and raised an alarm, quickly gathering a crowd of villagers.

Despite the crowd, no one dared to enter the house. One villager contacted Sushil Mishra, a known snake rescuer from Gulelha. Mishra arrived promptly and, with assistance, began extracting the snakes. By 2 PM the following day, over 150 cobras had been safely removed.

Nishad’s house, although a solid structure, had become infested with snakes due to rat burrows, which the snakes used as their home and breeding ground. The local forestry department was notified during the night, and Mishra reported that all the rescued snakes were taken to Valmiki Nagar Forest for release.

The operation revealed a massive snake infestation in just one room of the house, showcasing the extent of the problem. Mishra noted that only one large male cobra was caught, while another adult cobra had escaped. The rest were juvenile cobras.

This extraordinary rescue has highlighted the importance of timely intervention and the bravery of individuals like Sushil Mishra, who risked their safety to handle the situation.
