Over 100 injured as balcony collapses during festival in northern India
In a tragic incident in northern India’s Bihar, over 100 people were injured when a crowded balcony collapsed during an orchestra performance at the Mahaveeri procession late in the night.
The incident took place in Chhapra district on September 3.
Visuals showed the collapsed structure with debris scattered, and people rushing to help the injured. Many of the victims were rushed to the Isuapur Community Health Center, while others were treated at local private clinics.
According to reports, the accident occurred at the Isuapur fair, where thousands had gathered for the annual celebration. Spectators had climbed onto a balcony to get a better view of the performance when it suddenly gave way under their weight, causing panic and chaos.
The balcony’s collapse has raised concerns about crowd management and safety during large gatherings in the area.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with hundreds of people on the roof suddenly crashing down. The injured, many of whom suffered serious injuries, were immediately attended to by local residents and emergency services. The festival, known for its grand Mahaveeri procession, included several orchestra groups, which drew large crowds.
Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the cause of the collapse and to ensure such an incident does not occur again. The district administration has called for stricter safety measures at future events to prevent a recurrence of such a disaster.
