New road construction amid heavy rainfall sparks controversy in northern India

Northern India’s Haryana witnessed a road construction during heavy rains with workers working in extreme rainfall, raised questions and criticism.

The incident took place from Namaste Chowk to Meera Ghati in Karnal on June 29.

Visuals showed amidst heavy rainfall, workers were seen constructing a road, undeterred by the weather. Tar was being laid down and spread evenly, while heavy machines were actively being used alongside. The workers continued their tasks, ensuring the tar was properly placed and leveled, despite the challenging conditions brought by the relentless rain.

According to reports, the road from Namaste Chowk to Meera Ghati in Karnal had been in a dilapidated state for a long time, riddled with large potholes that worsened during rains. Despite heavy rain on Saturday afternoon, road construction continued. The project is reportedly being carried out under a tender worth approximately ₹1.5 crores. The administration stated that the tar laid during the rain was removed and will be rechecked on Monday. If any defects are found, an investigation will follow.

Similarly, in Hisar, a road construction project was underway, where tar was laid during rainfall. This road is intended to connect to the Sirsa National Highway. The issue came to light when a passerby shared a video of the construction on social media.
