Mumbai police team ambushed by mob in stone-pelting attack at railway station

A team of police officers was allegedly attacked by a mob while attempting to apprehend a suspect. The incident involved stone pelting, leaving four officers injured and requiring hospital treatment.

The incident took place at Ambivali railway station in Mumbai, Maharashtra on December 4.

According to reports, Manoj Patil, DCP of the Government Railway Police (GRP) said that the attack occurred during an operation to detain a suspect. He stated “The mob, which included relatives of the accused, hurled stones at the police team. The situation was eventually brought under control, and the injured officers were taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.” The Thane police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and are working to identify and apprehend those involved. Patil said, “The mob initially gathered outside the railway station premises. The investigation into the incident is being led by Thane police.”

Dr. Swapnil Nila, Chief Spokesperson of Central Railways, clarified that the railways had no involvement in the incident. “The situation arose following the arrest of a suspect by MIDC police. Train operations were unaffected, though a few glass panes at the station were damaged due to the stone pelting. Footage of the incident has been shared with the state police for further action,” he said. Authorities are continuing to investigate the case, focusing on identifying members of the mob and determining their role in the attack.
