Massive traffic jam on flyover amid heavy rains, commuters abandoned vehicles to walk home in southern India
Heavy rains triggered a massive traffic jam in southern India’s Karnataka flyover, trapping commuters for over three hours. The gridlock forced frustrated IT employees to abandon their vehicles and walk home.
The incident took place at Electronics City flyover in Bengaluru on October 23.
Visuals showed commuters abandoning company buses and cars, making their way home on foot after being stuck for more than three hours.
According to reports, this incident occurred despite the government having already declared a public holiday for schools, though higher education institutions remained open.
The chaos unfolded after heavy rains caused a gridlock on and below the Electronics City flyover. Frustrated by the standstill, many IT employees left their vehicles behind and walked home.
The Karnataka government had issued an advisory earlier in the week, requesting companies to allow employees to work from home on Tuesday and Wednesday, in anticipation of the heavy rainfall. However, some companies reportedly mandated employees to come into the office, exacerbating the traffic situation.
This is the third time in a week that heavy rains have forced school closures in the city. Severe flooding also affected parts of Bengaluru North following a thunderstorm. While the water has receded in many areas, some localities are still dealing with stagnant water.
To compensate for lost school days, the government has instructed schools to hold extra classes on Saturdays or Sundays.
