Massive avalanche strikes northern India, no casualties reported

A terrifying incident unfolded on the National Highway of northern India’s Jammu and Kashmir as snow collapsed off a mountain.

The incident took place on the Zoji La pass, Srinagar-Leh National Highway, Kargil district on April 20.

Visuals showed a scene of chaos and peril unfolded as an avalanche of snow cascaded down from the towering mountains, completely blocking the highway below. Traffic has come to halt because of the avalanche. No casualties were reported in the incident.

Persistent rainfall has caused numerous landslides, leading to the shutdown of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. Traffic authorities have reported multiple landslides occurring between Banihal and Ramban sectors, prompting the closure of the highway. Efforts to clear the landslides are being impeded by the continuous heavy rainfall. Not only is traffic halted on the Jammu-Kashmir Highway, but also on several other roads including the Srinagar-Leh, Mughal Road, Sinthan-Kishtwar, Bandipora-Gurez, and Kupwara-Tangdhar routes due to heavy snowfall and rain.
