Mass Protests Erupt in Pakistan Over Alleged Quran Desecration; Police Station Attacked

In a troubling incident in Pakistan, a large mob of approximately 2,000 people attacked a police station on November 20. The chaos unfolded at the Khazana police station on Charsadda Road in the Peshawar district, where tensions escalated rapidly over allegations of Quran desecration.

Visuals from the scene captured the turmoil, with thick smoke and flames engulfing the area as rioters set fire to property. The crowd expressed their outrage over claims that a man desecrated the Holy Quran during a domestic dispute. Protesters demanded the release of the accused, who was already in police custody, fuelling further unrest.

As the situation intensified, the mob vandalised the police station’s main gate and hurled stones at officers. Police responded with tear gas and warning shots to disperse the crowd, attempting to restore order. Several police officials, including Superintendent of Police (Rural Division) Inam Jan, sustained injuries during the violence, particularly from stone-pelting. Fortunately, no fatalities occurred, and the injured officers received immediate medical attention.

The protests severely disrupted traffic on Charsadda Road, causing hours of delays and significant inconvenience for commuters in the area. This unrest highlights the deep-seated tensions surrounding religious sentiments in Pakistan, sparking widespread concern and calls for calm among local leaders and citizens alike.
