Marathon effort by officials save elephant calf stranded in well
An elephant calf stranded in a well during the late hours of the day was swiftly rescued by the fire and rescue department, saving the life of the helpless animal.
The incident took place in Kothamangalam Municipality, located in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, southern India, on December 2.
Visuals show the elephant calf stranded in a well, immersed in the muddy water. The distressed animal was seen struggling to climb out, while firefighters swiftly arrived at the scene and commenced a prompt rescue operation. The calf appeared agitated as it remained trapped, while rescue personnel worked tirelessly, demolishing part of the well to create an accessible escape route. Moments later, the calf was seen walking out, safe and unharmed, as fire officials stood proudly together for a group photo following their successful rescue.
Speaking to Newslions, Anil Kumar M, Assistant Fire Officer at the Fire and Rescue Station in Kothamangalam, explained that he led the rescue operation after the baby elephant fell into a small well near a residential area. The elephants, attracted by the jackfruit, pineapple, and coconut trees, had wandered from the forest into the rural settlement.
He went on to mention that the other elephants, including the parents, gathered around the well, watching anxiously. Fire and Rescue teams, Forest Department officials, and local residents, armed with makeshift lights made from cloth and diesel, quickly arrived at the scene. Using a crowbar, they excavated around the well’s edge, pushing sand and stones inside to create a path for the calf to climb out. With the help of a rope, they carefully pulled the baby elephant to safety, successfully rescuing it from the well.
