Major road collapse in northern India leaves 15-foot deep pit; rescue operations underway

In a startling incident late at night, a road in northern India’s Delhi suddenly collapsed, creating a 15-foot deep pit. A rickshaw driver fell into the pit but was rescued by local residents and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The incident took place beneath a metro pillar in Trilokpuri area of Delhi on September 19.

Visuals showed in the aftermath of the road collapse, a large and deep pit dominated the scene, its edges crumbling and unstable. The pit was filled with various items that had fallen into it, including a rickshaw and a ladder, creating a chaotic visual. The rickshaw lay awkwardly at the bottom, its wheels jutting out at odd angles, while the ladder leaned against the pit’s wall, partially submerged in debris. Surrounding the pit, the road had completely caved in, leaving jagged edges and exposing underlying layers of asphalt and gravel.

According to reports the incident occurred around 9 PM, catching the attention of the local community as they rushed to the scene. Eyewitnesses reported a large crowd gathering as people worked together to pull the rickshaw from the pit. The driver was promptly admitted to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital for medical care.

Authorities were quick to respond, with police teams arriving to secure the area. Barricades were erected to prevent further accidents and keep the public away from the hazardous site. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Rohit Kumar Maharolia also visited the location to assess the situation. He confirmed that the police had set up barriers and assured that efforts to fill the pit would be completed within 2 to 3 hours.

Local police stated that the pit was approximately 15 feet deep and attributed the collapse to the heavy rains experienced in the city this monsoon season. Since early August, Delhi has faced continuous downpours, leading to deteriorating road conditions and multiple reports of collapses in various areas.
