Major highway blocked amidst catastrophic landslide in northern India
In a dramatic turn of events in northern India’s Himachal Pradesh, a landslide caused significant disruption on the national highway.
The incident took place in Matiana village of Shimla district, on September 16.
Visuals showed the dramatic moment when a large section of the hillside gave way, sending a cascade of stones and debris crashing onto the national highway. The sudden collapse enveloped the area in a cloud of dust and scattered debris, causing a substantial obstruction on the road.
According to reports, a truck parked on the roadside was struck by the debris, leading to a major traffic jam. Vehicular movement was halted for approximately one and a half hours. The local administration was alerted, and a team from the Public Works Department arrived with machinery to clear the highway. By 6:45 PM, the highway was partially reopened as a one-way route. Efforts to remove the remaining debris continued late into the night.
