Major fire at chemical storage facility in western India: no casualties reported
by Komal KashyapA significant fire erupted early this morning at a warehouse storing chemicals in western India’s Maharashtra. The blaze began around 3 a.m., resulting in the godown (warehouse) collapse.
The incident occurred in the Mankoli area of Bhiwandi, Thane district on May 13.
Visuals showed fire fumes covering the entire area making the visibility almost nil but fire brigades came swiftly to rescue.
Yasin Tadvi, Chief of the Disaster Management Cell for the Thane Municipal Corporation, confirmed that no injuries occurred during the incident. The fire, which filled the surrounding area with a strong, unpleasant odor due to the burning chemicals, posed a significant challenge to local fire services.
Fire engines from the Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation, Kalyan-Dombivli civic body, and Thane were dispatched to the scene. The combined efforts of these teams brought the blaze under control by approximately 9:30 a.m.
This incident highlights the potential hazards of storing chemicals and the importance of stringent safety measures in such facilities. Further investigations are expected to determine the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage.
