Locals chase away herd of elephants in eastern India
A group of people was seen chasing away a 27 elephants from a field in eastern India’s Odisha.
The incident happened in karanjia forest division of Mayurbanj district on June 6.
Visuals showed the group of people running towards the herd, from which one elephant seemed to retort with the crowd being scared away temporarily.However, they made their way toward the field and the group of people once again ran after them.
Regional Chief Conservator of Forests, Prakash Chand Gogineni, stated, “Last night, a herd of 27 elephants came from the Thakurmunda area adjacent to Keonjhar district into the Singada section of the Karanjia division in Mayurbhanj district. They passed near some agricultural lands and settlements, but there was no damage as there are no standing crops. The herd has now moved towards the Reserve Forest. Some people were chasing the elephants, and we have alerted them. If anyone attempts to injure the elephants, we will register a case under the Wildlife Protection Act.”
