Lion ambush cattle, but herd fights back heroically

A pride of lions attacks cattle in western India’s Daman and Diu, western India, but luckily escapes. This caused widespread fear among locals after venturing close to populated areas.

The incident unfolded when the pride, moving from Dhangarwadi village in Diu district, hunted in the region on November 22.

Visuals showed the majestic lions hunting in the area, with other cattle seemingly unscathed as they crossed paths with the lions. However, their presence has left the local community in a state of anxiety.

According to reports, this is the first sighting of a lion pride in Diu in a long while, causing significant concern among residents. The lions reportedly killed a domestic animal in the vicinity, further escalating tensions. Forest officials, collaborating with Gujarat’s forest department, managed to capture a lioness late Friday night. The operation continues as they search for sub-adult lions, aged between 1.5 and 2 years. The captured lioness was transported to the Jasadhar Animal Care Centre.

Harshraj Wathore, Deputy Conservator of Forests in Diu, explained that the Dhangarwadi area is sparsely populated with scattered vegetation, making it an ideal location for the lions. Authorities are focusing their efforts on capturing the remaining lions near the creek area.

The forest authorities emphasized the limited territory in Diu, which cannot support a pride of lions, necessitating intervention to avoid further human-animal conflicts.
