Lightning ignites fireworks unit in southern India, multiple workers sustain severe injuries

In a devastating incident in southern India’s Andhra Pradesh, multiple workers faced severe injuries when lightning struck a licensed fireworks manufacturing unit.
The incident took place in Suryaraopalem village in the Undrajavaram mandal of East Godavari district on October 30.
Visuals showed a massive fire raging furiously, creating a life-threatening scene as flames spread dangerously close to nearby areas. The injured workers lay on the ground, visibly suffering from severe burns. Families rushed to the hospital alongside them, and the scene appeared chaotic, marked by urgency and distress. Later, Tanuku MLA Arimilli Radha Krishna was seen expressing sorrow over the incident.
According to reports, lightning struck a nearby coconut tree around 5:00 pm, spreading flames to a makeshift shed under which fireworks materials were stored. The ensuing explosion resulted in the deaths of two women and severe injuries to five others, all of whom were taken to Asram Hospital in Eluru. Most workers managed to escape to nearby fields to avoid the blaze.
Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh extended condolences and directed officials to provide support to affected families. Authorities have registered a case and initiated an investigation.
