Landslide destroys major power station in northeastern India, no injuries reported

A significant landslide in northeastern India’s Sikkim has severely damaged the NHPC’s 510 MW Teesta-V Power Station, a key power installation in the region.

The incident took place in Balutar near Dipu Dara, Singtam of Gangtok district and the video went viral on August 20.

Visuals showed large boulders and debris rapidly descending towards the powerhouse, causing damage.

According to reports, fortunately, no injuries were reported as workers were evacuated days earlier due to minor landslides. The dam, which was already under reconstruction after damage from last year’s glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), sustained additional damage. The landslide highlights the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters.
