Lab attendant performs ECG on patient using YouTube tutorial amid staff shortage in northern India
A shocking video from a hospital in northern India’s Rajasthan has gone viral, capturing a lab attendant performing an ECG on a patient by following a YouTube tutorial.
The incident took place at Satellite Hospital, located in the Paota area of Jodhpur and the video went viral on November 2.
Visuals showed the attendant watching the tutorial on his phone while attempting to perform the scan, despite repeated requests from the patient’s family for a qualified medical professional.
The incident occurred during the Diwali holiday when, according to the attendant, no trained staff members were available. He reportedly admitted that he had no formal training in ECG procedures but felt compelled to try, given the situation. The family’s concerns were visibly ignored as the attendant reassured them that the machine setup was sufficient for the scan.
After the video spread widely on social media, the principal of the attached medical college, BS Jodha, stated that an investigation was underway. He confirmed that necessary actions will be taken against those responsible for the lapse.
This incident has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many questioning the hospital’s management and the attendant’s choice to rely on an online tutorial rather than ensuring patient safety through qualified personnel.
